Winnie vs. Opossum

Yesterday evening turned out to be quite exciting (read: terrifying for Brittain). Last night around 6:00 I called the dogs in for dinner. I went to get everyone organized and I noticed that Winnie (I know, I haven't given you much information about her at this point...) wasn't there. No big deal... she often goes to snoop around all of the nooks and crannies in the house when she comes inside. I called and called her... no Winnie. So, I went to the back door in case she she was waiting for me there. No Winnie. I went outside and looked for her. No Winnie. I called her and I heard a little bark coming from somewhere so I went out searching for her... She had somehow found her way under our storage shed (which is only about 6 inches of clearance) and couldn't find her way back out. As I was tearing the lattice off of the shed to give her an escape the nose of another animal poked out right by my hand! It looked to me as though it was the nose of an opossum (a HUGE opossum). It startled me and I ran to call David. He called animal control and rushed home to help. I wasn't sure that it was an opossum. It could have been a raccoon or because of how large the nose was, I even considered it might be another dog... We finally got her out but couldn't find the other animal. The cops showed up and they went to look for the animal while I looked Winnie over and took her to the emergency vet. The vet couldn't find any injuries either so we gave her a rabies booster and brought her home (to lots of hugs and pets). It was a very stressful night but things ended with the best case scenario so I am definitely not complaining! Just happy everyone is safe and sound!
